The Most Fascist Senate Dems (So Far)
A month and a half ago, I did an overview of the most fascist Democrats in the House and now it’s the Senate’s turn.
I have to admit, this article has taken me a while due to trying to figure out how to count fascist votes in the Senate. In the House, there is a vote for cloture to end debate and then passing the bill. Since cloture and passage only need a simple majority to pass, both votes are very typically the same and become redundant to count. So, for the House, I left cloture votes out of the totals.
The thing though is, in the Senate, a simple majority isn’t enough to pass cloture thanks to the filibuster. Traditionally filibusters are used to keep a bill from going to a vote by speaking for as long as possible and refusing to step down. To make sure that this doesn’t become a regular tactic to stop all legislation, the Standing Rules of the US Senate sets cloture at 60 votes, which then allows for a maximum of 30 hours of debate. In this session, there have been three bills introduced and two where the cloture vote was very different from the passage vote. In traditional times, voting for cloture on a bill you planned to vote against was common decorum, just to ensure legislation was able to get a proper vote. It’s been clear extending this decorum in the time of Trump has been extremely helpful in allowing fascist legislation to pass.
All that said, I’ve decided to count cloture votes for Senators. I’ll also be including votes for fascist amendments to legislation, general passage for bills and resolutions, & administration appointments.
So, all that said, the fascist legislation that’s counted will be:
Cloture (1/5/25)
Motion to Proceed
Cloture (1/17/25)
Passage
S 9: Protection of Women & Girls in Sports Act
Cloture
HR 1968: Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2025
Cloture
Passage
SJ Res 26: Joint resolution disapproving proposed military sale to Israel (count if voting against)
S Res 195: Requesting information on El Salvador’s human rights practices
Motion to Discharge (vote to strike the resolution down to deny a proper vote)
SJ Res 59: Joint resolution to direct the removal of US Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran that have not been authorized by Congress (count if voting against)
SJ Res 34: Joint resolution disapproving proposed military sale to Israel (count if voting against)
134 administration appointments
Now, I do want to note that I personally don’t believe that voting yea for only one of these bills or nominees is enough to earn the moniker of fascist, but I also don’t believe that should preclude someone else from making that judgement. Everyone has their own litmus for this and if 1 vote out of 150 is enough for someone to consider a politician a fascist, then I get it.
Another thing to keep in mind is not every Senator included in the top 10 are up for re-election in 2026. For those that aren’t, now is just as good a time to support future candidates or prepare for your own run. For the one’s that are up for re-election in 2026, I am also going to add who is currently primarying them & also the state requirements on how someone like you can run against them. I’ll supply links to primary opponent’s campaign sites (if they have one), but also remember to thoroughly vet the opponents as well. Mentioning primary opponents here is not an endorsement, just a statement that they have declared that they are running.
If you intend to run for office, keep up to date on requirements to run. Rules vary whether to are running as a Democrat, 3rd party, or independent & ballot access laws are subject to change between now and 2026.
Before we get any further, I wanted to add a quick chart for all the Democratic Senators running for re-election in 2026 that didn’t make the top 10:
