Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act

HR 6945

What is this bill?

This bill would amend section 404 of the Social Security Act, which covers use of grants intended for “aid and services to needy families with children and for child-welfare services.” The amendment would add a short sub-section that would ban prohibiting states from excluding crisis pregnancy centers from these grants.

What makes this bill fascist?

First things first, what are crisis pregnancy centers? On paper, they are health centers that focus on very basic pre-natal care, help expectant parents prepare for their child, and supply diapers, baby food, & baby clothes to those in need.

In reality, they are massive scams that disguise themselves as abortion providers that use pseudo-science and outright lies to further an anti-choice agenda. There’s a ton of info out there about them, but the most digestible piece is this segment from John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight.

What makes this such a valuable tool for fascism stems from the ideology’s utter disdain for reproductive health. The reasons are as multiple as they are infuriating & a very solid summary of them is Wombs and the War on Freedom: A Study of the Fascist Obsession with Reproductive Control by Adithya Kamesh for Feminism in India. It’s a nine minute read, but if you need more of a bullet point list:

  • reproductive health is at immediate odds with machismo and ‘traditional’ gender roles. If someone has a right to choose if they give birth or not, then that empowers them in ways that were historically forbidden.

  • since fascism is in need of a state of eternal war, it also needs a source of eternal troops. Within fascism, anyone who can give birth is expected to do so and it becomes their only role. As such, abortion becomes a grave sin against the state.

  • acceptance of abortion, especially in America, is a modern idea, and one of the dozen things that fascism loathes is modernism.

I would also recommend checking out this interview conducted by WBUR with professors Anne Wingenter & Erica Chenoweth, especially if you more of an audio learner.

All that said, forcing states to extend grants to CPCs allows a new avenue for fascism to fund their move towards striking down reproductive health.
